Rice Krispies treats are a simple sweet snack that few people can resist. Ideally, they should be ooey gooey, not hard as rocks. Here's the technique to making them soft and delicious for days.

Grease a baking pan, or line with parchment paper.

Gather and measure out all ingredients. The process is quick, so all ingredients must be ready and handy.

Melt butter or margarine in a large pot on low heat.

Add the whole bag of marshmallows to the pot. Mix and coat all of the marshmallows with the butter. Let the marshmallows melt slowly, but not completely—the mixture should still be lumpy.

When marshmallows are mostly melted, turn off the stove and immediately add Rice Krispies cereal. (Use 7 cups for really gooey treats.) Mix cereal into melted marshmallows. Mix from the bottom up, evenly coating the cereal with the marshmallows.

Quickly pour the mixture into the baking pan. Spread out the mixture evenly. DO NOT PRESS DOWN. Pressing down the mixture results in hard treats.

Let cool for one hour before cutting.

The squares will stay soft and gooey for several days. Store in a greased container with a lid for freshness.

Tip

Feel free to sub in any of your other favorite cereals: Cheerios, Fruity Pebbles, Cocoa Krispies, you name it!

Drizzle chocolate ganache on top for a more decadent treat.
