When it comes to comfort food, the grilled cheese sandwich is a popular and satisfying classic. However, its name is a little misleading. You don't actually need a grill or even a stovetop to produce this cheesy treat. You can make a grilled cheese sandwich in the microwave in about 30 seconds.
Tips
Toast the bread to at least a moderate crunchiness to help keep it from becoming soggy in the microwave.
Step 1: Butter the Bread
Spread the butter evenly over both pieces of toast.
Tips
Butter — or a comparable product — is essential to making a grilled cheese sandwich. Without butter, the bread will become unpleasantly dry.
Step 2: Put the Sandwich Together
Place the slices of cheese in between the pieces of toast with the buttered sides facing out on a microwave-safe plate.
Tips
Choose a thinly sliced soft cheese, such as American, provolone or cheddar, for easy melting. Hard, thick cheeses, such as Parmesan, are difficult to melt quickly.
Step 3: Microwave the Sandwich
Microwave your sandwich on high for 25 to 30 seconds or until the cheese is melted.
