Bread crumbs are a common ingredient in many recipes. They can be used as a binding ingredient in meatloaf, a topping for casseroles, or as breading for meat. While you can purchase bread crumbs at your local grocery, healthier and more flavorful bread crumbs are only a few minutes away using your microwave. This recipe makes about a cup of bread crumbs.
Cube the bread. Stack the slices three high, and cut into 2-inch wide strips. Turn the strips 180 degrees and cut them into uniform 2-inch cubes.
Spread the bread in an even layer over the bottom of a microwave-safe container. Microwave on high power for 5 minutes, or until crunchy.
Pour the hardened bread cubes into the zip-top bag. Seal the bag, and using your hands or a meat mallet, crush the cubes into bread crumbs.
Store the bread crumbs in the zip-top bag away from air and light, or use them immediately.
Tip
The thinner the layer of bread cubes, the faster the microwave will cook them. Consider microwaving in two batches to speed preparation.
