Fashion Tips for Middle Age Women

By Amelia Allonsy

When women reach middle age, it is not uncommon for them to have fashion crises. Some women believe that their age requires them to dress in simple, dowdy clothing. Other women, desperate to recapture their youth, insist on dressing in clothing that is designed for twenty-somethings. If you are middle aged, you can be fashionable and still convey an age-appropriate appearance. These tips for middle age women will help you put your best fashion foot forward.

Choose the Right Colors

As you reach middle age, you should avoid wearing bright shades of primary colors. Stacy London, co-host of TLC's "What Not to Wear," advises that middle aged women should opt for clothing in jewel tones rather than primary colors. When it comes to neutrals, choose soft shades of navy, charcoal, black and khaki, but avoid wearing too much black close to the face. Black and white ensembles work best as evening wear because the contrast can be too bold in the daytime.

Find a Perfect Fit

A perfect fit helps hide problem areas that arise as a result of changes to the body at middle age. Although it may get frustrating, try on several different types and styles of clothing until you find a cut and style that are right for your body shape. If you're unsure of what looks good on you, have a friend take some pictures so you can get an accurate idea of how a piece makes you look. Higher quality clothing, while more expensive, is made from better fabrics and has more accurate cuts than cheaper clothing items, so they are more likely to provide a good fit.

Minimize Accessories

Less is more with accessories on middle age women. Rather than pile on several different pieces of jewelry, choose one bold statement piece to accentuate your outfit. If wearing a neutral-colored suit, wear a jewel-tone shirt under the jacket and add a chunky necklace in the same color to draw attention to the neckline. Avoid statement purses with bright colors or funky designs; choose modest purses in solid colors instead. Scarves are a great way to accessorize an outfit, adding a bit of flair to an otherwise muted look. It's OK to choose bold designs in scarves, as long as the colors aren't too bright and the design coordinates with the other colors in your outfit.
