Scars can seriously distract from an otherwise nice complexion. Thankfully, there are many treatments available which can get rid of scars. Thick scars are more difficult to get rid of than thin, delicate scars, but they can be removed with consistent treatment. It’s important to be diligent with your scar removal treatment plan in order to see results. Be aware that it generally takes several months to effectively remove thick scars.

Things You'll Need

Massage the scar. Use firm pressure and circular motions to rub the scar for at least two minutes. Do this three or four times throughout the day. Massage helps to break up thick scar tissue and increases circulation, thereby allowing needed nutrients to more readily reach the area.

Apply scar treatment ointment. Available in most drug stores and pharmacies, scar treatment ointments contain natural ingredients like onion extract which break down scars. You’ll need to apply the ointment three times daily for at least two months before you see improvements in the scar.

Get laser treatments. Lasers have been shown to be the most effective means of treating thick scars. The intense laser light penetrates thick scar tissue, breaking up so it is then absorbed by the body’s immune system. The light also stimulates collagen production so the area will look firmer and younger after treatment. Generally, repeated sessions are necessary to remove thick scars.

Consume a healthy diet. Proper nutrition is imperative in order for the skin to heal properly. Eat fresh foods often, particularly ones that are rich in zinc, Vitamin C and Vitamin E. When you nourish your body well, your skin will be better equipped to heal from scarring.

Try microdermabrasion treatments. During sessions, a small machine will be used to buff away your top layers of skin. As a result, your scar tissue will be buffed down and broken up, helping to eliminate your thick scars. You’ll likely need several treatments, spread over a few months, to get rid of your scars.

  • Get cardiovascular exercise regularly. Exercise increases circulation which aids in skin’s recovery.
