For men, having thick hair is a blessing and a curse. On one hand you're glad you have it, but on the other, it's difficult to make it lay flat and next to impossible to keep it looking sleek without regular maintenance. There's no wash-and-go when you have thick hair. It's a texture that requires daily styling to keep from looking like a bowl cut. However, with the right product and a textured or layered haircut, men can take control of a thick mane with relative ease.

Work with a hairstylist to pick a razor cut or layered hairstyle that's right for your face shape and personal taste. Texturizing removes weight from your hair, helping it to lay flat. Razor cuts are younger and trendier looking, and layered styles work better for longer hair and more conservative styles.

Get your hair trimmed every six to eight weeks depending on its thickness and how fast it grows back. A downside to thick hair is that it's very obvious when you haven't had a haircut in awhile, so visit a stylist often if you can.

Apply a small amount of styling cream, such as a light weight, pliable styling product that will give shine to locks without hardening it.

Apply a small dab of styling wax and work it through the hair. This provides extra hold and separation.

Wash hair every other day or every few days. The hair's natural oil will help it to lay flat and style more easily.
