One of the most common ways to lighten your hair color is to purchase an over-the-counter chemical agent that makes hair lighter or to visit a professional hair stylist. If you want to avoid chemicals or are pregnant and are concerned about how chemical hair dyes might affect your baby, try lightening your hair naturally with honey. The trace amounts of hydrogen peroxide naturally found in honey are an alternative to chemical hair dyes.
Things You'll Need
Pour 1 tablespoon of honey into a glass dish. Mix in 1 cup of warm water. Stir the honey and water together.
Let the mixture sit undisturbed on a counter for 30 minutes to allow the hydrogen peroxide in the honey to activate. Stir the mixture one more time.
Dip a small paint brush into the honey water mixture. Apply the mixture to your hair until your hair is coated.
Select a sunny spot outside to sit in where you can expose your hair to full sun for 20 minutes. If desired, mix 1 tablespoon of olive oil into the mixture after the honey has sat for 30 minutes to add a conditioning effect to your hair. Place plastic wrap over your hair while you sit in the sun, or leave the honey mixture on your hair overnight to increase the lightening effect.
Shampoo your hair and rinse with clean water.
If your hair is not as light as you want it, repeat the process but use more honey. Mix 3three-fourths of a cup of honey with 1 1/2-cups of your normal hair conditioner. Let the mixture sit for 30 minutes and brush it onto your hair. Cover your hair in a shower cap or plastic wrap and let the mixture remain on your hair for eight hours. Spend at least one of those hours in direct sunlight.
