The samurai costume is a popular one for Halloween and other costume parties. One of the most important parts of the costume is the makeup. While real samurais probably didn't wear makeup as part of their outfits, the white face has come to be considered part of the samurai's official look. Even official toys from Japan in the past depict the samurais with a white painted face. So, to dress as a traditional samurai, you need to wear the makeup. It is actually easy to apply, and just as easy to take off.
Cleanse your face as you normally would. Rinse with water and pat dry with a towel. You may need to wait a few minutes before applying the makeup because your face needs to be completely dry for it to work.
Define your look with a samurai hairstyle. Part of the whole samurai look is their unique hairstyle. Slick back your hair with gel, if you have a shorter hairstyle; if it is longer, try putting it in a bun. Not only is this an important part of the costume, but it also helps in applying the makeup by keeping the hair out of your face.
Apply the white makeup to your face using the makeup sponge. Every area from the forehead to the chin needs to be covered in white. The ears do not have to be painted, nor does the neck.
Cover any gaps in your first coat of makeup. Pay careful attention to creases around the eyes, mouth and forehead. It is important to have an even covering over the whole face. It is also important that you completely cover the eyebrows. The Japanese would shave their eyebrows and draw in new ones, but it is unlikely that you will want to go that far.
Draw in "angry eyebrows" with the black eyebrow pencil above the natural brow line. You can get as fancy as you like with these. The more elaborate the better. Some samurais also penciled in some mouth extensions in the corners of the mouth.
