A minor burn, also known as a first-degree burn, harms only the very top layer of skin. While painful, this type of burn responds well to treatment at home. Sunburns, rope burns and most burns incurred while cooking are examples of minor burns you can treat with home remedies. Keep the burn clean to avoid infection. If your burn blisters or causes pain that doesn't subside with treatment at home, or if you burn your face, see your doctor right away.
Cool Your Skin
Running cold water over the burned area cools the skin and can bring immediate pain relief. Hold the area under running water for five to 10 minutes for best results. Keep the tap turned to a gentle flow of water that isn't painful for you.
Apply Aloe Vera
The gel from the aloe vera plant, or creams made from this gel, can cool and soothe minor burns and stop the pain. Apply the gel to the burned area three to four times a day.
Over-the-Counter Pain Relief
Take over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen, aspirin or acetaminophen can provide pain relief from minor burns. The Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center warns you shouldn't give aspirin to children under 18.
Herbs and Spices
The book "Timeless Secrets of Health and Rejuvenation" reports that the spice turmeric, used to make mustard and an ingredient in curry powder, can reduce inflammation and relieve pain. Also known by its Latin name, Curcuma longa, turmeric is available as a capsule.
