How to Find a Dermatologist That Specializes in Hair Loss

Hair loss is a common issue that can be caused by overuse of styling products, overexposure to the sun, stress, unhealthy diet and hormonal imbalance. If you notice that your hair is thinning or falling out, consult a dermatologist. A dermatologist will evaluate your hair loss to determine whether your condition will need medical treatment or resolve on its own. There are many options for finding a dermatologist who specializes in hair loss.

Contact your general practitioner and ask her for a referral. Your physician will have a list of dermatologists and other medical specialists she can recommend.

Ask your health insurance company for a referral. Ask about the dermatologist’s years of practice and qualifications, and whether he has a website you can visit.

Use online resources to locate a dermatologist. The UCompareHealthCare.com website can assist you in locating a dermatologist in your area and provide you with information about the dermatologist, such as any disciplinary actions, education, board certifications and hospital affiliation.

Visit the American Academy of Dermatology website (see Resources). It can help you find a licensed dermatologist near you.

Visit a free clinic in your area if you want to find a dermatologist but don’t have health insurance. A physician in the free clinic might be able to refer you to a dermatologist who can treat your hair loss for free or charge you a small consultation fee. See the Resources section for a link to find a free clinic in your area.
