Tips on Wearing a Down Vest

By Chanel Adams

Down vests are the perfect alternatives to jackets and they're not just for skiers and snowboarders. Since they're so versatile, you can wear them with everything from a turtleneck sweater to a button-down shirt. With your down vest, you can use it for most of the year. Some people are afraid to wear them because of how puffy they are. What you really need is to wear a seamless piece underneath to pull off the look.

With a Camisole or Tank Top

In the cooler months, you can wear your down vest with a camisole or tank top. Pair it with boot cut jeans for a put together look. You can easily put this look off in the fall or spring, when it's not so cold. The best way to wear this look is by having your tank peek out from the top of your down vest. Open your vest a little, so your tank shows through. Just make sure that the armholes of your vest aren't too low.

With a Button Down Shirt

Believe it or not, a down vest looks great with a button down shirt. You don't have to wear it with a sweater or long sleeve shirt. Wearing it with a button down shirt or blouse makes your look preppy and pulled together. Just make sure your blouse is not too long. Having too much show at the bottom of your vest will make you look frumpy; you want to look proportional.

With a Graphic T-Shirt

Add some personality to your look by wearing a graphic T-shirt underneath--it doesn't matter what kind you wear. It can be a shirt featuring a band, Disney character or witty saying. Make sure to leave your vest opened, so you can show off your shirt, and always make sure the down vest compliments the colors of the T-shirt.

With a Turtleneck or Sweater

A down vest and a sweater is a classic look. You can stay warm, while looking cute. If you want, opt for a turtleneck sweater. Make sure to choose a sweater that's semi-fitted and compliments the color of your vest. You can go for a monochromatic look, which will make you appear taller and leaner, for example, try a black sweater with a red down vest. Wearing a printed sweater with a down vest will make you appear bigger.
