Glycerin is a humectant, which means that it holds moisture in the skin, making it an effective ingredient for skin care, particularly for dry skin. Glycerin can be found in many skin care products, including facial lotion, crème, exfoliant and some makeup. You can also make glycerin products at home for use on the skin. There are a few ways to use glycerin on the face.
Use a glycerin soap, which can be found at most grocery stores, drug stores or beauty supply stores if you have dry skin. Wash your face with the soap twice a day and rinse with lukewarm or cool water.
Look for facial moisturizers with glycerin listed in the ingredients, preferably in the first three ingredients, which means that there are high levels of glycerin in the lotion. It may appear as 'glycerol' in the ingredients. Apply the lotion immediately after bathing when skin is still soft and damp to allow for deeper penetration.
Look for facial masks that contain glycerin and other moisturizing ingredients, such as shea butter, to apply to the face two or three times weekly. These products help moisturize and purify skin and can be found at most grocery stores, drug stores or natural health stores.
Create your own facial mask by combining 1 tablespoon glycerin, 1 tablespoon ammonia water, 1 tablespoon honey and ½ cup cold water. Mix until a thick paste is formed and apply to the face. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes and then rinse with cool water. Store in the refrigerator. Ammonia water and glycerin can be purchased at most drugstores or pharmacies.
When using glycerin products on the face, watch for any allergy symptoms, including redness, rash, itching, swelling or difficulty breathing. If any of these symptoms occur, discontinue use and consult a doctor.
