African American hair is naturally super dry and we have to be consistent with our hair care regimen to keep our hair properly moisturized to ensure healthy hair. Caramel hair treatments are an excellent way to moisturize dry hair, as well as, soften and stretch out the kinkiest hair.

If you have natural hair, the caramel treatment can loosen your hair texture, help with less hair shrinkage and increase moisture. Your hair will detangle easier and be more manageable. With all these benefits of caramel treatments, your natural hair will straighten easier with less heat.

If you hair is relaxed hair, the caramel treatment can help you stretch the time between your touch ups by softening your new growth. This is great if you are growing your hair out, to go all natural.

Caramel treatments last for approximately four weeks and should be reapplied if you want to keep reaping the soft hair benefits. However, a caramel treatment every 4 weeks can really start to pinch the pocket book and DIY is always best if it’s possible. Caramel hair treatment recipes are simple and can be made with items you probably already have in your kitchen cabinet.

Use the following steps to give your hair a caramel treatment.

Things You'll Need

Place the banana in a food processer and blend well.

Pour the processed banana in a blender and then add the honey, Olive Oil, Molasses, Apple Cider Vinegar, Cornstarch and Wheat Germ Oil. Blend until you have a smooth mixture. If the mixture is too dry, add water.

Pour the mixture into a pan and heat on medium setting. Stir constantly, while the Cornstarch causes the mixture to thicken. If the mixture is too thick add more water. If the mixture in too soupy add a little cornstarch. The mixture will be like thick batter and turn into the color of caramel. Don’t cook the mixture, just warm until it thickens up.

Pour the mixture into a container.

Apply to hair. Divide the hair into 4 sections and clip. Starting with first section, part hair and apply a generous amount of the mixture to the root and rub in with your fingers. Continue to apply mixture to the ends of your hair.

Cover hair with a plastic cap and let it sit for 1 to 2 hours. If your hair is really dry then let the mixture stay on overnight.

Wash the mixture from your hair. Deep condition and style your hair as usual.

Freeze any remaining mixture until you are ready to use it next time.
