Proponents of alkaline water say that drinking it can optimize health, slow the aging process and prevent numerous diseases. Alkaline water is claimed to flush toxins from cells, prevent toxins from accumulating and make hydration more effective because it penetrates cells better than other types of water. You can make your own alkaline drinking water at home using several different methods that raise the pH of water over the neutral level of 7.

Add baking soda to distilled water. Begin with 1/2 teaspoon baking soda to 1 gallon or water. Shake the jug to mix the baking soda and water thoroughly. Check the pH of the water with a pH test strip. Distilled water has a pH of about 7 or a bit lower, and you want this mixture to measure between 8.5 and 9. Add more baking soda if the pH level is lower and test it again. Next time, you'll know how much baking soda to add.

Buy alkaline tablets or drops to add to water. These are commercial products available for purchase online. One brand, for example, works by mixing two drops in an 8-ounce glass of water.

Buy a water-ionizing machine that produces alkaline water from tap water. These machines connect directly to a faucet and are easy to install. They add an electrical charge to minerals in the water to produce water with a higher pH.

Use an alkaline jug filter to turn tap water into alkaline water. You can add bottled water to the jug instead, but distilled water cannot be used with this filter because it needs minerals to work.
