Pomegranates are full of antioxidants and are said to be effective in lowering cholesterol and preventing several types of cancer. Pomegranate extract can be consumed pure or used to make pomegranate juice, and it's a healthy addition to any diet.

Cut the pomegranate in half and use your fingers to scoop the seeds into the mixing bowl.

Use a blender to blend the seeds until they are crushed and pulpy.

Lay two pieces of cheesecloth on a flat surface, one on top of the other. Pour the blended seeds into the center of the cheesecloth, then gather the ends of the cheesecloth together so that it makes a bag.

Hold the cheesecloth bag over a container and squeeze until juice stops coming out. The seed casings will stay in the cheesecloth, and the pomegranate extract will be collected in the container.

Cover the pomegranate extract and store, or repeat with another pomegranate for more extract. One pomegranate makes 1/3 to 1/2 cup of extract.

Tips

  • Wear old clothing or a dark-colored apron, as pomegranate juice stains.

  • If the pomegranate seeds are difficult to remove, try filling a bowl with water and submerging each half of the pomegranate in the water to loosen the seeds. Then use a strainer to separate the seeds from the water.
