How to Make Homemade Concert T-Shirts

By Faith Schuster

Concert T-shirts are a great way to make a fashion statement and to show support for your favorite bands. While they are readily available for sale at shows and on the official websites of many bands, they are often expensive and may not come in the size or style that you would like. Fortunately making your own concert T-shirts a fairly simple process and, best of all, you can customize the shirt to suit your specific sense of style and sensibility.

How to Make Homemade Concert T-Shirts

Step 1

Purchase the blank T-shirts and iron-on transfer paper needed to make your own concert T-shirts. The shirts themselves should be 100 percent cotton. White or light-colored shirts are the easiest to work with. However, if you would like to create a dark or black concert T-shirt, you can use special iron-on transfer paper for dark fabrics instead. Standard iron-on transfer paper, along with the dark fabric transfer paper, is readily available at any craft store, though it can also be found at office supply stores.

Step 2

Pre-wash and dry the new shirts before you begin making them into concert T-shirts. This step will not only clean the T-shirts, but it may also cause a minor amount of shrinkage since the fabric is all cotton. It's important that any minor shrinkage take place before ironing on the design, because washing and drying it after the fact can cause puckering and wrinkling in the iron-on design.

Step 3

Select a design or band logo that you would like to use on your T-shirt. Images can be found on band websites or, if you would prefer, you can even create your own band logo or design using graphics software. Whichever option that you choose, use a program such as Adobe Photoshop or GIMP to set the size of the image that you would like to use on your concert T-shirt.

Step 4

Print the design onto the iron-on transfer paper using your printer. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure success. Set the printed design aside for about 5 minutes to make sure that the ink has dried completely. Once it has, continue to follow the manufacturer's directions as to how to safely use an iron to add the design to your T-shirt. The shirt will then be complete and is ready to be worn.

Step 5

Care for your handmade concert T-shirt by washing it in cold water on the gentle cycle. You can also wash it in a lingerie bag or pillowcase to keep it from rubbing against other items in the laundry. Hang the T-shirt to dry in an area away from direct sunlight instead of putting it in the dryer, which can lessen the life span of your homemade concert T-shirt.
