How to Make a Solar System Cake

By Athena Hessong

Make education edible with a science lesson-based solar system cake. Though making a cake proportionate to the actual solar system would require a cake yards in length, a representative solar system can be made. To make the planets, opt for fondant. This edible, sugar-based cake decorating product is readily available at baking supply stores. Working with it is as easy as shaping clay.

Step 1

Color 2 cups of the cake frosting black with food coloring or gel icing coloring, stirring with a spatula. Spread the colored icing to completely cover the top of a baked and cooled sheet cake still in the pan.

Step 2

Break off a ping pong ball-sized piece of the fondant. Put on the disposable gloves and knead in yellow food coloring or gel icing coloring into the fondant to make the sun.

Step 3

Flatten the yellow fondant into a round circle, 1/8-inch thick, with the bottom of a flat drinking glass or your palm.

Step 4

Place the circle in the center of the cake for the sun.

Step 5

Color two marble-sized pieces of fondant orange, and roll them into spheres for Mercury and Mars.

Step 6

Mix yellow coloring into a piece of fondant the size of a large shooter marble to make Venus.

Step 7

Combine blue into two fondant spheres the same size as Venus to make the Earth and Neptune.

Step 8

Color another sphere the size of Earth green to make Uranus.

Step 9

Mix orange into a large golf ball-sized sphere for Jupiter.

Step 10

Make Saturn by shaping a sphere slightly smaller than Jupiter and coloring it green. Roll a piece of green fondant into a rope between your hands and wrap it around the green Saturn.

Step 11

Roll a pea-sized ball of fondant, colored gray, to create Pluto.

Step 12

Flatten all of the planets with the base of a drinking glass.

Step 13

Arrange the planets around the sun in the middle of the cake in the following order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto -- from the closest to the sun toward the outer edge of the cake.

Step 14

Sprinkle edible glitter or star-shaped sprinkles over the cake for a star field.
