Coconut oil is a natural oil that has many health benefits. When consumed, it can help lower the risk of heart disease and atherosclerosis. It can also be used in cosmetics, such as lotion, soap, or perfume. To make coconut oil blend with food and cosmetic products, a process of emulsification has to be performed. A number of different methods can be used to emulsify coconut oil. Each method depends on what the coconut oil will be used for.

How to Emulsify Coconut Oil

Pour 1/4 tsp. of liquid soy lethicin into a mixing bowl.

Add 8 oz. of coconut oil to the lethicin. Stir the mixture with a whisk until it is well blended. Add this mixture in small quantities to foods such as yogurt, coffee or baked goods.

Store the mixture in an airtight container, and place in a cool and dry location.

For Cosmetic or Other Non-food Use

Purchase an essential oil emulsifier from a health food store or online retailer.

Follow the manufacturer's directions for adding emulsifier to coconut oil. Typically, the requirement is 70 percent coconut oil to 30 percent emulsifier.

Mix the emulsifier and coconut oil well. Add this mixture to lotion, bubble bath or directly to bath water.
