With superstars such as Grace Kelly, Marilyn Monroe and Elizabeth Taylor setting the standard for fashion and beauty, the 1950s evokes a sense of classic style that has influenced women for decades. Whether for a wedding, prom or other special occasion, styling your hair with barrel curls reminiscent of the 1950s will add a high degree of sophistication and elegance to your formal look.

Bobby pins are an essential tool for making 1950s style barrel curls.

Step 1

Wash your hair. It is easiest to create 1950s style barrel curls with a clean head of hair.

Step 2

Place a quarter-sized amount of blow-dry gel in towel dried hair. Use a round brush to smoothly blow dry your hair.

Step 3

Part your hair on the left side. Begin sectioning off your hair into handful size pieces.

Step 4

Wrap each section of hair around the curling iron. As the hair is cooling, use bobby pins to secure the curls as they cool.

Step 5

Take out the bobby pins and spray your hair with a shine product. Thoroughly brush your hair from top to bottom to loosen the tight ring curls and create the barrel curl look.

Step 6

Finish by spraying your hair with a light-hold hairspray.
