Some people like the feel of a loofah or mesh scrubber in the shower or bath. But unlike a washcloth, a scrubber -- used to slough off dry skin and clean your body -- may not get a thorough cleaning after each use. When it's left hanging in the damp shower, it can become a breeding ground for germs and bacteria. Whether it's made of natural or synthetic fibers, a scrubber can be cleaned using bleach. Do this once a week and it will safely last as long as three months.
Rinse the loofah under warm water. Squeeze it out several times to remove any soap residue.
Fill a sink or bucket with one gallon of cool water. Add 3/4 cup of chlorine bleach if the loofah is made of synthetic fibers, or 1/4 cup of bleach if it's made of natural fibers.
Submerge the loofah in the bleach water and let it soak for at least five minutes.
Take it out of the bleach solution and rinse it thoroughly under running water.
Wring out the loofah and give it a few good shakes to remove the excess water. Hang it up to air dry.
