Watermelon seed tea is considered to be a natural diuretic helpful for kidney cleansing. The inventor of the tea was Edward Cayce, who was known in his time for his herbal concoctions and his sleep readings. Many of Cayce's formulas are available to the public today and are still used in association with everyday health concerns. Cayce died in 1945, but his ideas are still implemented and used today.

Who Was Edgar Cayce?

Edgar Cayce died over half a century ago. In his day, he was referred to as "the sleeping profit." Cayce was famous for lying down once a day with his hands folded over his chest and putting himself in a deep, almost meditative, state. During this self-induced sleep, he was asked questions about one individual and was said to be able to give the answers to any question that was asked. During these "readings," a stenographer recorded the answers. Later, a copy was sent to the person requesting the information and a second copy was kept in a file. Today, more than 14,000 copies of Cayce's readings are on file at the Virginia Beach Association for Research and Enlightenment Inc. They are available to the public.

What Is Watermelon Tea Used For?

Watermelon seed tea can be used for cleansing and clearing out the kidneys. It is particularly useful as a home remedy for helping to rid the kidneys of kidney stones. It's relatively simple to make and is made from ingredients most people either have in their kitchen or can easily find.

Making Watermelon Seed Tea

The Cayce recommended dosage for watermelon seed tea is to make 2 liters and to drink throughout the day over a two-day period of time.

To make 2 liters, take 4 tbsp. (approximately) of fresh watermelon seeds and eight cups of water, which is equal to 2 liters of water. Grind the watermelon seeds either using a blender or a coffee grinder. The seeds can be removed from a fresh store-bought watermelon and do not have to be purchased separately. Watermelon seeds need to be fresh, so purchasing dried watermelon seeds is not advised.

Bring the water to a boil over high heat on the stove top. Pour the boiling water over the ground watermelon seeds. Allow the watermelon seeds to steep in the boiling water for 10 to 15 minutes. Allow the mixture to cool and strain the liquid.

Administering the Tea

Two liters of the watermelon tea can be sipped over a two-day period. On the third day, you should take a break from drinking the watermelon tea. Most people choose to drink half the mixture (or four cups) on each of the two days. You can drink more or less than four cups on day one, but make sure there is enough tea left over after for day two.

Cayce suggested drinking watermelon tea at least once per day for three days out of the week. For someone who is following the guidelines of drinking the tea for two consecutive days and then taking a break for a day, this would mean drinking the watermelon tea for two days in a row, avoiding the watermelon tea all together on day three, and then drinking up to four cups of the tea on day four.
