Hard water, sun and chlorine leave hair brittle, and those who color their hair frequently also experience damage. Spray hair and scalp with conditioner or a sun protectant and wash hair after going in the ocean or swimming pool. Diet also plays a role in hair health; consume fruits, vegetables and protein to nourish hair and follicles. Natural ingredients like mayonnaise and honey make hair soft and manageable, and improve the condition of the hair.

Effects

Reduce the effect that the environment has on the hair by protecting it. Sun, wind, chlorine and excessive hair coloring or chemicals break down the hair, leaving it brittle and dry. A natural ingredient like mayonnaise is ideal for dry hair because the oils within the product penetrate the damaged hair shaft and moisturize it to make it soft and shiny. Honey has been used in the same way, moisturizing and nourishing dry and brittle hair and increasing shine. Honey also improves the health of hair follicles, which in turn produces thicker and more beautiful hair.

Types

Experiment with the basic mayonnaise and honey hair treatment by adding other natural ingredients like essential oils or olive oil. By creating a blend of these natural ingredients, the hair and scalp get the conditioning they need to be healthy and promote manageable hair.

Application

Mix together one cup of mayonnaise, one avocado and two tablespoons of honey and massage into dry hair, concentrating on dry ends. Add two or three drops of essential oils such as rosemary or lavender to create a distinctive hair treatment, or a half cup of olive oil to provide extra conditioning. Use a shower cap to cover the hair and leave on for 30 minutes.

Removal

Rinse the mayonnaise and honey hair treatment out in a warm shower. Massage the scalp to get the blood flow going, which helps to stimulate hair growth and health. Once the treatment is washed out completely, use a clarifying or moisturizing shampoo and conditioner as usual. For those who have dry hair, using a shampoo and conditioner that adds moisture is ideal to create shiny and smooth hair. Remove excess moisture from the hair with a towel and let air dry. Refrain from using blow dryers as much as possible, since the heat can damage the hair

Considerations

Use the mask only once a week for normal to dry hair, or twice a week for damaged or brittle hair. Using more frequently than that might cause buildup to occur, so try a light spray-in conditioner to use throughout the day. Protect hair from elements such as the hot sun or over-chlorinated pool to help keep hair healthy. Wash hair every other day if possible to keep from stripping natural moisture and oils.
