How to Turn Cake Mix Into a Fancy Dessert. Regular cake mixes may seem ordinary and not good enough for guests or a special dinner. However, you might be surprised how many fancy desserts can be made by combining those ordinary cake mixes with a few extra ingredients.

Step 1

Combine a box of devils food cake mix with a can of cherry pie filling, a teaspoon of almond extract and 2 beaten eggs to make a chocolate cherry cake. Pour the batter in a rectangular pan and bake the cake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees F. Frost the cake with chocolate frosting.

Step 2

Make a blueberry dump cake by putting a small can of undrained, crushed pineapple on the bottom of a rectangular baking dish. Pour a can of blueberry filling over the pineapple, and sprinkle a cup of chopped walnuts over the blueberry filling. Spread a dry yellow cake mix over the top and dot the top with 1/2 lb. of butter. Bake the cake for 1 hour at 350 degrees F, and serve it warm with whipped cream.

Step 3

Create a simple orange cake. Mix a package of white cake mix with a small package of orange gelatin, 3/4 cup of orange juice, 2/3 cup of vegetable oil, 2 tsp. of orange extract and 4 beaten eggs. Pour the batter in a greased and floured angel food cake pan and bake the cake for an hour at 325 degrees F. Let it cool and frost it with a mixture of 2 tbsp. orange juice and 1 cup of confectioners sugar, or a container of whipped topping, thawed.

Step 4

Begin with 1 large can of apple pie filling to make an apple crunch cake. Put the pie filling in a rectangular cake pan and top it with a box of spice cake mix, a cup of chopped nuts and 2 sticks of melted butter, in that order. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F and bake the apple crunch cake until it turns golden, about 45 to 55 minutes.

Step 5

Cook a package of chocolate pudding to make a chocolate pudding cake. Mix a chocolate fudge cake mix as directed on the box and add a small bag of semi-sweet chocolate chips, a cup of chopped nuts and the cooked pudding. Pour the batter in a rectangular cake pan that has been greased and floured, and bake it according to the directions on the cake mix box.
