Wheat germ is the oily, reproductive section of the wheat plant that eventually sprouts and becomes grass. One half cup of wheat germ provides 25 percent of your recommended daily value of protein and 15 percent of your daily recommended value of potassium making it an extremely nutritious food. It's nutty flavor is perfect for adding to baked goods, smoothies and even veggie burgers. Wheat germ is typically packaged already toasted in an airtight jar, but if you would like to toast your own the process is quick and simple.

Oven Method

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit.

Spread the wheat germ evenly over a cookie sheet.

Cook for five minutes or until lightly browned.

Stove Top Method

Heat a dry skillet or saute pan over medium high heat.

Spread the wheat germ evenly over the pan.

Toast, stirring occasionally, for five minutes or until lightly browned.


You can also use these methods to toast nuts or seeds.
