Considered to be the ultimate American cocktail, the martini has graduated from its old gin-and-vermouth tradition to a panoply of libations so vast that entire bars are devoted only to this sophisticated sip. While it might not be a drink that the fictional James Bond would order, the sweet dessert martini has entered the bartender's lexicon and shows no sign of disappearing. As delectable as the Godiva chocolate martini can be, it reaches an advanced level of decadence with the addition of Baileys Irish Cream.
- 1 lime wedge
- 1 1/2 teaspoons grated dark chocolate
1 ounce Godiva® liqueur; white, dark or milk chocolate
1 ounce premium vodka
1/2 ounce Baileys Irish Cream, Salted Caramel, Chocolate Cherry or Vanilla Cinnamon
1 cup ice, cubed not crushed
1 teaspoon chocolate syrup (optional)
1 Godiva® chocolate truffle on a long cocktail toothpick
Salted caramel, maraschino cherries or cinnamon stick
White chocolate or milk chocolate for other variations
Spread the grated chocolate in a saucer. Dampen the rim of a chilled martini glass with the lime wedge, then dip the rim in the chocolate shavings and return the glass to the chiller.
Combine the Godiva® liqueur, vodka, Baileys Irish Cream and ice in a chilled cocktail shaker. Shake vigorously and strain into the rimmed martini glass. Drizzle chocolate syrup (optional) in a zigzag pattern across the top of the drink. Garnish with a truffle.
You'll need one square from a large-size chocolate bar for the grated chocolate. Use dark chocolate, not the unsweetened cooking variety. For easier grating, stick the chocolate in the freezer for 10 minutes. In a pinch, you can substitute cocoa powder for the your rimmer.
If you like the the taste of chocolate-covered caramel candy, use Baileys Salted Caramel liqueur and Godiva® milk chocolate liqueur. Coat the rim of the glass with sugar and garish with a soft and chewy caramel on a cocktail toothpick. Sprinkle the top of the drink with some shaved milk chocolate -- it's too soft to stick to the rim well.
Substitute Bailey's chocolate cherry specialty liqueur for the standard Irish Cream and pair it with the dark chocolate Godiva®. Rim the glass with grated dark chocolate and garnish with two maraschino cherries on a cocktail pick.
Made with Madagascar vanilla, Baileys Vanilla Cinnamon goes best with white chocolate Godiva® in this pale and pretty martini. Rim the glass with vanilla sugar, shave a square of white chocolate over the top of the drink and garnish with a cinnamon stick.
