Fondant icing allows almost anyone of any skill level to make themed cakes. You can design a World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) cake, for example, like a wrestling ring or simple round logo. Though early attempts at cake decorating are rarely perfect, an hour or two of work should produce a pleasing WWE cake.
Things You'll Need
Dust your work surface and a rolling pin with cornstarch to prevent sticking.
Place a ball of fondant on your work surface and thin it out until it’s about 1/4-inch thick and roughly the shape of your cake. You can either make fondant icing from scratch or find it at a specialty store.
Lift the fondant from the table and gently place it over the cooled cake. Remove the fondant from the cake after comparing the size. Add more fondant, if needed, and roll it out again to repeat the size check if it is too small. Once the fondant sheet is large enough, set it aside carefully.
Cover the cake with a thin layer of buttercream frosting and lay the fondant sheet back over it. The frosting acts like fondant glue.
Stretch the fondant lightly around the cake to remove any folds or air bubbles. Run your hand over the top and sides of the cake to create a smooth surface. You can also use the back of a plate for this.
Cut the excess fondant away from the edges of the cake with a sharp knife or a pizza cutter and set the excess aside for later.
Mix a ball of fondant with black food coloring and then roll it out into a rectangular shape that is long enough to wrap around the edges of the cake. Measure how tall the edge of the cake is and cut the rectangular shape to that height.
Use a pastry brush to wet one side of the black rectangle and then press it to the white fondant around the edges. Trim it to size with a knife, press it firmly against the sides of the cake and then smooth the seam of the fondant with your fingers. You can sculpt leftover black fondant into small pillars and place them at the corners of the “ring” if you are using a square cake.
Place a few spoonfuls of buttercream icing in two bowls. Dye one bowl of icing with black food coloring and one with red food coloring before spooning them into clean piping bags.
Draw the WWE logo in the center of the cake with the back and red icings using the piping bags. Next, add WWE logos over the black on the sides of the cake for a more authentic feel.
Refrigerate the cake in a covered container until you are ready to serve.
For a simpler WWE cake, use a knife to cover a cake in white buttercream icing and then use a piping bag to add a black WWE symbol to the center and black lining around the edges.
For a more in-depth WWE cake, bake a round cake and two square cakes. Position the square cakes on either side of the round cake to make a shape like a WWE belt, cover the shape in black fondant and then pipe in yellow and white frosting for the metal design in the center.
