A snare drum cake makes perfect sense because it's already round, so you can focus all your skill and attention on making the frosting perfect. Personalize the color based on the band or the theme of a favorite album and use the blank top to write your message. Whether you're going for realistic or whimsical, study pictures of snare drums so you capture the proportions, colors and parts.

Pour the cake batter into two 8-inch round cake pans and bake the cakes according to the recipe.

Remove the cakes from the pans and allow them to cool completely. Cut the domed tops off the cakes so you have two flat discs.

Place one cake securely on a cake stand or serving board. Frost the top of the cake only. Place the second cake on top of the first cake to create a double-layer cake.

Frost the top and sides of the entire cake, using a spatula to smooth the frosting as much as possible.

Mix a small amount of frosting and food coloring in a small bowl to achieve the desired color for the drum bands. Load the frosting into an icing tube and attach the flat wide tip.

Squeeze the frosting in a straight band along the top and bottom edges of the cake to create the drum bands.

Place a small amount of frosting that is the same color as the cake frosting into an icing tube and attach the thin round tip.

Use a thin, single-strand candy rope to create a zigzag pattern around the sides of the cake. Secure the candy rope with small dabs of frosting.

Dab frosting and attach a small round candy to each angle at the top and bottom angles of the zigzag.

Place two pretzel rods crisscross on top of the cake to imitate drumsticks.

You can also use frosting to create the zigzag pattern. Try frosting the sides of the cake in a different color than the top.
