How to Make a Camo Cake

By Angela LaFollette

If you know someone who loves camouflage, then consider making him a camo cake. The icing does not have to be the only part of the cake decorated in camouflage. It is possible to turn the cake batter into a camouflage design. Impress your guests, friends or family members by making your own camo cake. Consider making a trip to your local craft store for the necessary supplies for your camo cake to ensure that you will have all the necessary supplies to get started.

Preheat the oven to the recommended temperature. Consult your recipe or cake box for the appropriate baking temperature.

Prepare your cake according to the boxed directions. You can use your favorite cake recipe for the camo cake, but ensure the cake is white once it is prepared.

Separate the cake mix into four mixing bowls. Try to separate the cake mix as evenly as possible so you will have a variety of camouflage colors.

Add the food coloring paste to each bowl. Only add a little paste at a time to ensure you do not make the color too strong. If you cannot find tan food coloring paste, only add a very small amount of brown to the white cake mix.

Spray the cake pan with nonstick spray.

Spoon the cake mix into the cake pan. You will want to leave the cake mix in blotches when spooning it onto the cake pan. Try to alternate the colors as much as possible so your cake will look like authentic camo.

Bake the cake in the oven. Bake your camouflage cake according to the cake's directions. Insert a toothpick into the center of the cake when it is finished baking. If cake batter sticks to the toothpick, bake the cake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes.

Separate the white icing into four mixing bowls. Add the food coloring paste to the white icing. This will make the camouflage icing for your camo cake.

Allow the cake to cool completely before applying the icing. Spoon the icing out on the cake. Smooth each spoonful of icing out on the cake. Create blotches of the colors on the cake, alternating the colors.

Add any additional embellishments. Create a border with candy, turn your sheet cake into a tank or add army toys to the camo cake.

Store the camo cake in the refrigerator to prevent the icing from running.
