The 1980s was the era of big hair, Valley girls and the quintessential nerd. Skippy, Peewee, Poindexter and Muffy made us laugh and cringe with their irreverent attempts at fashion. Reproducing that 80s nerd look is easy to do. So, if you want to channel your inner geek, look no further than the back of your closet, your local thrift store or try your hand at online shopping.
Things You'll Need
You know you’re a geek if…
Create a nerdy hairstyle. For men, grease your hair and comb it to one side in front. Hair should be a short length as Geeks don’t grow long hair. For women, wear your hair long and straight. Style it into a bun, braid or neat ponytail low on the back of your head.
Dress like a nerd. For men, wear button-down, collared shirts with front pockets. Choose long, narrow slacks worn high on the waist and fold the hem up several inches for a flood pant appearance. Don a vest or a pair of suspenders to complete the effect.
For women, wear long-sleeved dresses and tops or full length skirts, slacks or dresses that touch the ankles. Choose smock or overall styles. Wear ill fitting cardigan sweaters one size too small or big.
Accessorize like a 1980s nerd. Men should wear thick rimmed, black glasses and put a pencil above the ear. Attach a bow tie snugly about the neck, preferably one with a red or a polka dot pattern. Store a pen and calculator in the shirt pocket. Wear a watch.
Women should select round, thick or dark rimmed glasses with a simple eyeglass chain draped around the neck. Don a watch, but no other jewelry.
In the summer, geeks choose shiny nylon short shorts with white hems and t-shirts (preferably Star Wars or Battlestar Galatica) that are one size too small. Tube socks with tennis sneakers add character to the outfit. To keep perspiration from your eyes, wear sweatbands on your wrists and head. Any hand-held technology (eg. a Merlin, or Atari brands) lends credibility to your ensemble.
