Adding layers to your hair can make you look edgier, give your hair texture and make styling easier. If you are more of a "do-it-yourself" kind of girl, you probably want to try this at home but might be a bit intimidated. Although there are many different techniques to layering, one of the easiest ways to do it at home is the ponytail method. With just a few snips, you can choose how choppy or long you want your layers without ever having to leave your own bathroom.
Comb through wet hair to remove any knots and tangles.
Flip your head over and comb the hair forward toward your forehead.
Gather your hair together with one hand and determine where the ponytail will sit. The closer to your forehead the ponytail is, the choppier the layers will be. The closer to the nape, the longer the layers will be.
Move your hair to the desired location - anywhere between three inches from the nape of your neck to your forehead - and secure it into a ponytail with a hair elastic. Make sure the ponytail is centered in between your ears.
Slide the hair elastic down the gathered hair until the hair below the elastic is the amount you want to cut off.
Cut through the hair below the elastic, making a straight, blunt cut. The gathered hair will be thick, so you may have to saw through the hair slowly to get through.
Remove the hair elastic and comb your hair straight down to see your new layers.
