How to Get Rid of Bed Bugs in Hair

By Diana Braun

Bed bugs often make their home in dark areas under bed mattresses or in the box spring and bed frame. If you find bed bugs in your hair, you may have them living in your bed or in your clothing. It is important to get rid of bed bugs in your hair as soon as possible because they feed on blood. Your scalp may get irritated and itchy and you may notice many tiny bites. Although bed bugs are not as tenacious as lice, they do tend to move downward to your arms and legs in search of a warm place to nest. Bed bugs are related to lice and can be killed by using head lice shampoo.

Step 1

Apply a quarter size of head lice shampoo to wet hair and scalp. Lice shampoo can be found at most grocery stores and pharmacies. Work the shampoo into your hair and on your scalp as well. Allow the shampoo to remain on the hair for 15 to 20 minutes.

Step 2

Rinse your hair with warm water. Work the water into your hair and on your scalp to completely rinse the shampoo from your head.

Step 3

Remove the bed bugs from your hair using a nit comb. A nit comb is fine-toothed and allows the bugs to easily be collected on the comb.

Step 4

Rinse the comb in a sink to get rid of the bed bugs.

Step 5

Continue to comb through your hair until you have thoroughly covered your entire head.

Step 6

Repeat the application of shampoo every two days until the bugs are gone.
