A 24-hour cleanse is a relatively fast and easy method for cleansing the body of toxins. As long as you're in good general health, a cleanse can be used as a quick fix after a weekend of heavy partying and/or eating. There are many variety of cleanses, so finding one that works for your health needs and dietary preferences doesn't need to be difficult. There are two important factors to consider when choosing a cleanse: what is the goal of the cleanse (i.e. detox, weight loss, treat fatigue), and whether you want to restrict caloric intake or fast completely. Additionally, it's important to note, you will likely need to abstain from alcohol and tobacco products during your cleanse.

Choosing The Right Cleanse:

After deciding on your goal, determine whether you want to purchase a pre-made cleanse, which can be more costly, or use a combination detoxifying foods, like pomegranates, almonds, grapefruits, cabbages etc. If you choose to make your own-- pick a blend of foods that you enjoy; you'll be more likely to stay committed to the program.

You may also supplement with herbs to help facilitate the detox process. A ready-made cleanse will have the herbs included. If you're making your own, using a recipe, it's a good idea to consult an herbalist or a health food store to learn about and purchase common cleanse ingredients like psyllium husk (a bulking agent). Other herbs/spices, like cayenne pepper (liver cleanser), may already be in your spice rack or pantry.

Tip: do your research. There's a lot of worthy information out there to help you choose the most beneficial, and cost-effective cleanse to meet your personal needs.

Guidelines for during your cleanse:

--Pick a 24-hour period, like a weekend day, when you have a light schedule. It's best not to choose a busy work-day, as your body will be experiencing some changes as it goes through the detoxification process. A relaxed environment will also help your body to respond more positively to the cleanse, in comparison to a hectic, stressful setting.

--Take at least 2 hot showers during the 24 hour cleanse period. The scrubbing action + hot water, enhances blood circulation and opens the pores, allowing toxins to flush freely from the body.

--Exercise for at least an hour during the cleanse period. The activity will also promote blood circulation and toxin expulsion. Basically, you'll sweat it out. If you're fasting, be sure to exercise gently. A brisk walk would be more appropriate than a grueling run.

--Consider visiting a sauna during the cleansing period. Similarly to showering and exercising, a sauna, will increase body temperature, there by increasing blood flow, opening pores and aid in greater purification of the body.

-Drink about 7-10 glasses (64-80 oz.) or water throughout the 24-hour period.

Warning

Check with your doctor before beginning any type of fast or cleanse, especially if you're being treated for any medical conditions. Most 24-hour cleanse programs aren't designed to be used for longer than a day. Stop the program if you begin to notice any serious side effects, such as gastrointestinal pain. Visit a doctor or ER right away if you become intensely dizzy or begin to hallucinate.
