Come the end of a busy week, your grooming routine may have taken a back seat once or twice. A missed shampoo or moisturizing session will leave skin and hair feeling a bit lackluster. Instead of penciling in a trip to the spa, allow yourself to indulge in a day of pampering at home. Look to your kitchen cupboard and beauty cabinet to put together a spa day that will leave you feeling rejuvenated.
Soften and revive your most overworked limbs with an intensive moisturizer. Mix 3 tablespoons cold cream, 1/2 teaspoon tea tree oil, 1 teaspoon olive oil and a banana in a blender. Smooth the mixture liberally over your hands and feet, then pull on a pair of cotton gloves and socks. Allow it to sink in for half an hour and rinse with warm water. Use after exfoliating for best results.
Deep cleanse and nourish your skin with masks put together from kitchen staples. For oily skin, wet your face and apply a thin layer of honey. Allow the honey to dry for 5 minutes and rinse with warm water. Honey is antibacterial and draws out impurities while soothing skin. If you have dry skin, throw one avocado, an egg yolk and 1/2 cup honey in the blender and apply it to damp skin. Rinse after 5 minutes to banish flakes and achieve a healthy glow.
Deep condition your hair to help it regain shine and elasticity using an oil treatment. Wash your hair with your usual shampoo, but skip the conditioner. If you have dry, coarse hair, coat your damp tresses from root to tip with olive oil, and for fine hair use coconut oil. Pull on a shower cap and rotate a hair dryer above the shower cap on medium heat for 3 minutes. The heat will help the oil to absorb deeply within the cuticle. Turn the hair dryer off and allow the mask to sit for 30 minutes. Rinse thoroughly with warm water.
Use a body scrub to slough away dead skin, leaving it smooth and healthy looking. Mix 1 cup granulated sugar with 1/2 cup vitamin E oil. Vitamin E is deeply hydrating and will absorb into the skin as the sugar scrubs the top layer away. Step into the shower and dampen your skin with warm water. Step away from the stream of water and use your hand to smooth the scrub over your skin using a circular motion. Rinse your skin and gently pat skin dry with a towel.
Set the Mood
A soothing environment will help you relax and make the most of your spa day. Draw a bath and pour in some bubble bath or moisturizing bath oil. You can soak in the bath while donning a homemade face mask. Light some scented candles in your bathroom and dim any lighting. Set out a book or some magazines that you haven't read yet and play soft music. Pour yourself a glass of wine, sparkling water or some decaffeinated tea to sip on as you pamper yourself.
