Creating a line of makeup can be difficult or easy depending on what type of makeup you want to make, how much of the product you want to produce and where or how you want to sell the finished line. A higher-end line of makeup with lots of different items in production would most likely be made in a laboratory or private manufacturing company with trained professionals who run them. However, more simple makeup items can be made in your own kitchen.

Things You'll Need

Decide what type of makeup products you want to make. If you want to create a full line of makeup, you will most likely need the assistance of a private manufacturing plant. Another option is to make your own products at home using common ingredients found at any supermarket and other ingredients such as dyes and bases that must be ordered from a manufacturer.

Make sure that you have enough funds to pursue this project. Although a small makeup line can be relatively cheap to create (only a few hundred dollars), a larger line will require at least $5,000 or more depending on how many different makeup items you want to create, and whether you will make the products yourself at home or seek out the services of a private label manufacturer.

Develop a name and a concept for your makeup line. Make sure your chosen name for your line isn’t in use by any other brand or company. Once you have decided on a name, register it and trademark it to make sure that no one else uses it. Your concept could target teens, men or older adult women.

Obtain a business license from your state. Most business licenses can be obtained by filling out an application and fulfilling other requirements. After you have obtained a license and any permits needed to create your own line of makeup, you will need a tax ID, DBA and seller’s permit in order to be permitted to sell your cosmetics.

Acquire all the necessary ingredients and begin creating your own makeup products. You will need common makeup ingredients such as oils, waxes, bases, dyes, fragrance, essential oils, ethyl alcohol and glycerin. If you have decided to make your own products from scratch at home, then you will need to find some makeup recipes and begin experimenting. If you have decided to have your products made at a manufacturing plant, then prepare to meet with plant managers and chemists to discuss the development of your line.

Determine how you will package your finished items. You can put them into simple glass jars or create decorated jars and tubes.

Sell your finished product. You can begin by selling directly from your own home. Advertise around your neighborhood and host a makeup party where customers can try your products before purchasing them. You can also rent out space in a small boutique or a major department store, and introduce your product to patrons. There is also the option of selling your wares online and shipping the items to customers. Proper advertising is a very important step in getting the word out about your cosmetics line.

  • Try to come up with a novel idea for your personal makeup line in order to pique consumer interest. Whether your products are unique because you only use organic ingredients, or because the packaging is beautiful or even because you are providing an item that is not currently on the market, make sure that your new line has something different to offer.
