We’ve all been in that situation where you’re in a crowded place, stuck in traffic, or simply away from the comfort of your own home—and need a breather and/or ‘personal moment’ if you will. When that moment hits, the fight or flight response triggers immediate anxiety and restlessness. Luckily, through our own personal experiences, we rounded up three surefire ways to alleviate anxiety and help you work through stress mindfully.

Ongoing stress is one of the most dangerous patterns that our society faces. Stress can disrupt your hormones, nervous system, cardiovascular system; which in turn, produce more stress on trying to understand why you’re so tired, gaining weight, and irritable all of the time. Stop the pattern now and take these three recommendations with you:

1. Learn how to control your breath: When you’re in a stressful situation, start to count your inhales and exhales. This is REALLY important to establish mind control over your emotions. You can practice the 4-7-8 breathing exercise, which is: 4 counts on an inhale through the nose, hold the breath for 7 counts, then exhale through the mouth for 8 counts.

2. Put on some music! Music can immediately improve your mood. Throwing on your favorite song can suddenly turn your dead-stop traffic into a nostalgic #tbt moment. (Could You Be Loved by Bob Marley, anyone?!)

3. Use essential oils. Certain aromas are proven to send a relaxation stimulant to the nervous system, such as lavender, eucalyptus and rose. You can make a simple room spray (which would also work for your car), mix it with a carrier oil and dab a little on your wrists or temples, or one of our favorites— the ESYM scent pod. You can literally open it up and take a breath whenever you need it, keep it in your purse!
