For more than 200 years, homeopathic remedies have been used to treat everyday illnesses. Homeopathic remedies are made from different substances using a process of dilution and potentization. Nux Vomica is a homeopathic remedy made from the seeds of an evergreen tree. This particular evergreen tree belongs to the Loganiaceae family of evergreens. The seeds are ground to powder, diluted and potentized before being used.

How to Take Nux Vomica

Determine if Nux Vomica will help you. To use Nux Vomica successfully, the symptoms associated with the remedy should match with the symptoms of the patient. Each homeopathic remedy has keynote symptoms, which are guiding factors that help you choose the correct remedy to use. The keynote symptoms of Nux Vomica are digestive upset after overindulgence in food, alcohol, coffee or other stimulants; being irritable and overly sensitive; and having nausea without the ability to vomit. Once the symptoms match Nux Vomica, the second thing to match is the modalities. What makes the symptoms of the illness better or worse? Are they worse in the morning and after eating? Are they better after rest and applying firm pressure?

The closer the symptoms and modalities of Nux Vomica match the patient’s symptoms, the more success the patient will have in relieving his symptoms.

Determine what potency to use. Nux Vomica can be purchased in different potencies. The potency shows how many times the original substance was diluted and potentized. Common potencies are 6x and 30x. This means that one part of the substance was diluted in nine parts water and repeated six or 30 times. Homeopathy offers different potencies; however, for household use, a 6x or 30x is usually sufficient.

Determine how much to take. If Nux Vomica is purchased in pill form, three or four pills can be dissolved in the mouth 30 minutes before or after food. The remedy can be repeated as often as needed. If the symptoms are intense, the remedy can be taken every 15 minutes until improvement is noted. With improvement, the remedy can be taken as needed.

Warning

Homeopathic remedies can be antidote if exposed to strong odors, such as incense or aromatic oils. Heat above 110 F can neutralize remedies. Remedies should be stored in a dark place at room temperature away from any strong-smelling substances.

No side effects or interactions have been documented for Nux Vomica. Always consult your physician before taking any new remedy or supplement. For more information about homeopathic remedies, contact a qualified homeopath.
