How To Survive The Great American Eclipse on August 21st, 2017

By Jaliessa Sipress

On the 21st of August at 11:30am PST, America will bear witness to a full Solar Eclipse; a cosmic occurrence in which one astral body obstructs the light of another. In this case, the New Moon will be obscuring the Sun's light and will produce an ominous shadow. This means break-throughs, breakdowns and other perilous emotional situations become a potent possibility for all of us earthlings.

What does THIS Eclipse mean?

Astrologically, this Eclipse occurs within the very last degrees of the zodiac sign Leo. It is intimately attached to the Lunar Eclipse, which occurred on August 7th in Leo's opposite sign, Aquarius. At its core, the Leo spirit is one of enthusiasm, creativity and social standing. Leos are often the life of the party, a fire sign known for their flair for the dramatic and commitment to freedom of self-expression. Aquarius, on the other hand, is the visionary, the man with the plan and values freedom of thought. Aquarius is motivated by the needs and experiences of the collective while Leo often concerns itself with interpersonal connection. Aquarian energy is meta and detached while Leo is known for depth and passion.

How can you harness this Eclipse energy?

To fully take advantage of this Eclipse energy it is important to integrate the lessons and values of both energies. This Solar Eclipse is about re-defining our ego. Leo's emboldened sense of self is often shamed for being cocky or out-of-touch, but in reality our egos are what make us who we are. How we feel about ourselves, and our ability to express that, is what attracts relationships, our career paths, and generally defines our boundaries. Integrating our passionate, ego-driven personas into the collective spaces we reside in only serves to embolden the Aquarian vision. This event highlights the polarity between the personal and the political, the social VS the solitary and all of the ways we engage with the world around us.

Both of these signs are really only interested in one thing: Freedom. Your ability to emote, express, think and live freely and passionately by co-creating a reality that makes these forms of expression safe. New Moons are always about refinement and intentional action but the added Eclipse energy gives us an extra push to purge. It is time to address your limiting beliefs around your ability and capacity to make change and integrate your full self into every part of your work in this world. It's time to re-arrange the environment of your internal and external worlds to accurately reflect the needs of your ego.

What should you be aware of, emotionally?

The Moon is the ruler of the emotions. It brings out our softest selves, the parts of us in most need of protection. The Sun, on the other hand, is truly about outward expression, purpose and projection. It is the filter through which we understand the world around us. This Eclipse pulls no punches; it seeks to expose the wounds and insecurities we try to stuff into the shadows. Our best way through it is to show up for ourselves. Self-awareness and self-compassion is key. This is not about shame or blame; It is about honest re-alignment with your passion and your path. Ask yourself: "Where am I in my journey towards wholeness and happiness? How can I honor and make space for where I am on my path? How can I nurture my own growth and expansion?" Try to make space to tap in and chill out. There is no use in fighting what you feel. Eclipse energy reverberates throughout our whole lives, creating markers and milestones. Use this particular one to reconnect with your fire and make changes that stick.
