The Indian Names for Flax Seeds

Flax seeds are extensively used the world over for their health benefits and natural properties. They are used in Indian cooking and eaten as a supplement as well. Flax seeds are added to chutneys and breads like chapatis and parathas. Flax seeds are also substituted for eggs since, they form a gummy solution when mixed with water. Since they are widely used in India, flax seeds have different names in various Indian languages. They are also alternately known as linseeds.

Hindi is one of the most widely-spoken languages in India and nearly each kitchen ingredient has a corresponding Hindi name. Gujarati is spoken in the Western state of Gujarat, and Punjabi is the language of the northern state of Punjab. Urdu is spoken in most parts of India and is similar to Hindi. Flax seeds are known as Alasi in Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Punjabi.

Kannada is spoken in the southern state of Karnataka. Flax seeds are known as Agase in Kannada.
