Flax seeds are extensively used the world over for their health benefits and natural properties. They are used in Indian cooking and eaten as a supplement as well. Indian make chutneys and add flax seeds to Indian breads like chapatis and parathas. Flax seeds are also substituted for eggs since they form a gummy solution when mixed with water. Since they are widely used in India, flax seeds have different names in various Indian languages. They are also alternately known as linseeds.
Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Punjabi
Hindi is one of the most widely-spoken languages in India and nearly each kitchen ingredient has its corresponding Hindi name. Gujarati is spoken in the Western state of Gujarat, and Punjabi is the language of the northern state of Punjab. Urdu is spoken in most parts of India and is similar to Hindi. Flax seeds are known as Alsi in Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Punjabi.
Kannada is spoken in the southern state of Karnataka. Flax seeds are known as Agase in Kannada.
Tamil is the language of Tamil Nadu, a southern state of India. Flax seeds are known as Ali Vidai in Tamil.
Marathi is the language of the western state of Maharashtra. It is widely spoken in Mumbai and other cities and towns in Maharashtra. Flax seeds are known as Jawas or Alashi in Marathi.
Bengali is spoken in the eastern state of West Bengal. Flax seeds are used in several Bengali fish preparations and are known as Tishi or Pesi.
Malayalam is the language of the southern state of Kerala. Flax seeds are called Cheruchanavith, or Cheruchana Vithu, in Malayalam.
Telugu is spoken in the southern state of Andhra Pradesh. Flax seeds are known as Avise Ginzalu in Telugu.
