Baking in the sun or visiting a tanning bed in search of a bronze glow can lead to way more harm than good, but that doesn’t mean your dreams of golden gams need to go unfulfilled. Self-tanning lotions offer temporary color and the DIY varieties are free of added chemicals. Mix up your own recipe using a few basic ingredients for a fabulous -- and affordable -- faux glow.

Tea and Chocolate

Steep three or four black tea bags in about 3/4 cup of hot water. As the tea brews, combine 1/3 cup of raw cocoa powder with 1/2 cup of cocoa butter in a blender. Mix half of the steeped black tea with 1/2 cup of sesame or coconut oil and add it to the blender. Blend until smooth, then add the remaining tea. The longer your tea is left to brew before adding to the mixture, the darker the final pigment will be.

Massage the lotion into your skin to start building your bronzed look. Use sparingly over dry patches -- think knees and elbows -- and apply generously to areas where you want the deepest color. As an alternate method, skip the cocoa butter all together and put only the tea and oil into a spray bottle. Spritz onto your skin and rub in for a hint of golden color.
