A Long Island native born in 1959, Michael Kors is a celebrated fashion designer most noted for his work in American sportswear. He has launched women's and men's lines as well as beauty products, fragrances, home collections and handbags. As of 2009, he has been a judge on television's "Project Runway" since its inception in 2004.
Kors began his fashion career at 19 years old while working at Lothar's boutique in New York. He is an FIT graduate. He launched his namesake label in 1981 and served as a creative director for the French fashion house Celine from 1997 to 2003.
In 1983, Kors received DuPont's First American Original Award. In 1995, he won the Elle/Cadillac Fashion award for excellence. Kors won the Council of Fashion Designers of America award for Womenswear Designer in 1999 and Menswear Designer in 2003.
Kors has flagship stores in New York and Beverly Hills, California, as well as international stores in Hong Kong and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
Kors has designed for such celebrities as Jessica Simpson, Mary J. Blige, Pierce Brosnan, Charlize Theron and Usher.
According to a Marie Clare interview, Kors is a self-proclaimed terrible sewer, and is more interested in sketching and garment construction.
