Moderate to severe acne can be a painful and embarrassing condition that causes pustules and cysts on the skin. Once these blemishes heal, they can leave behind discolorations and scars that can be difficult to get rid of. Luckily, there are a few masks that can help reduce discoloration-type scarring. These masks can help cure acne scars and help create a smoother and brighter complexion.

Tea Tree Oil Mud Mask
Tea tree oil is an extremely powerful antimicrobial and antifungal substance that has been proven to be just as effective a benzoyl peroxide at clearing up acne blemishes and improving cell turnover. Typically diluted before use on the skin, tea tree oil can be utilized in its undiluted state when used in a skin mask. Using a green clay mask, which can be found at any health food store, add 5-6 drops of tea tree oil to 1/4 cup of clay. If the green clay is in powder form, add enough water to form a loose clay slip. Apply the mask to your face, focusing on covering the scarred areas with the clay. Let the mask dry completely, then rinse it off well with warm water.
Baking Soda Mask
Baking soda is an alkaline substance that can lift dead skin cells without scrubbing or rubbing the skin. This is very helpful for acne scarring, and can help remove particularly stubborn skin discolorations. A baking soda mask can work very quickly, and should only sit on the skin for up to two minutes. Mix together about 2 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 teaspoon of water, making a paste. Spread the paste over the skin, and let it sit there to dry. Rinse well with warm water.
Oatmeal is very soothing to the skin, and can loosen any dead skin and discolored scars that may remain after acne has cleared. Oatmeal is also full of nutrients and vitamins, such as vitamin A and the B vitamins, that can help reduce redness and inflammation. When using oatmeal on the skin it is important to use only the natural, steel cut oatmeal that has not been sweetened. The oatmeal mask will not only lift and help eliminate acne scars, but will also smooth out the skin tone and soften the skin. Combine 1/2 cup of oatmeal to 1 cup of boiling water. After the oatmeal has cooled completely, spread it onto the skin. Let the oatmeal remain on the skin for 15 minutes, then rinse well with warm water.
