Margaritas are the perfect drink to keep you cool and refreshed while the sun is beating down on you or during a hot summer night. Typically, they are made with fresh lime juice, but when you’re short on time and cash, limeade is a great alternative.
There are many different variations of the margarita, but the ingredient that is a constant is tequila. A classic margarita is made with tequila, fresh lime juice and orange liqueur like triple sec. Variations in flavors are done by changing the type of liqueur as well as using lemon juice instead of lime. This Mexican drink can be served frozen or over ice, with a salted or sugared rim.
How It’s Done
Limeade can be found in any grocery store; for this recipe it is best to use a 6-oz. can of Minute Maid’s frozen concentrate. In a tall pitcher, mix the limeade with 6 oz. water, 4 oz. tequila, and 2 oz. triple sec. For garnish, cut a lime wedge and rub the juice around the edge of the glass. Dip into a bowl of kosher salt and add the lime wedge to the rim. Pour the drink over crushed ice, or if you’d rather have a frozen margarita, blend with 2 cups of ice before serving.
If you are preparing one or two drinks rather than a whole pitcher, use a stainless steel cocktail shaker to mix all of the ingredients just like the professionals, but avoid using a shaker if you have carbonated ingredients. For garnish, there are pre-packaged margarita salts shaped perfectly to garnish the rim of your margarita glass. Margaritas are typically served in margarita glasses or in “rocks” glasses, which can be found at home furnishing stores, such as Bed, Bath & Beyond.
