Although drinking milk bolsters bones and teeth with calcium, magnesium and protein, helps regulate blood pressure and reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease, the creamy beverage also packs plenty of skin-friendly benefits. Calcium-rich milk lends homemade face washes a soothing, normalizing effect, and its vitamin E content helps smooth the skin. Milk, coupled with a few common household items, plays a part in numerous do-it-yourself face washes, each of which caters to different skin types.
Do DIY Dill
For an all-natural face wash that caters to all skin types and helps eliminate dead skin cells, turn to milk, aloe and the culinary herb dill. Cut a few lengths of fresh aloe down the center of each stalk, scooping out the gel with a spoon. (You can also use pure aloe-vera gel to save some effort.) Mix about a spoonful of aloe gel with a half cup of milk and a spoonful of finely chopped dill, stirring until the ingredients take on a smooth consistency. Massage the face wash into damp skin for roughly a minute and rinse your face clean with warm and then cold water. Milk and aloe exfoliate and soothe the skin, while dill fights off free radicals, which accelerate the aging process by breaking down the proteins that form skin.
Mix a spoonful of powdered skim milk with an equal amount of honey and stir in a couple drops of apple cider vinegar to create a gentle face wash that helps alleviate oily skin. After the mixture takes on a smooth, creamy texture, gently massage it onto your face in a circular motion. Massage for about a minute or so before rinsing your face with warm water. The addition of detoxifying apple cider vinegar helps this wash reduce inflammation and prevent acne breakouts.
Scrub for Success
Although face washes help calm and moisturize skin, scrubs slough off dead skin cells and open the pores, offering essential exfoliating properties. Combine a spoonful of milk -- go with skim for oily skin or two percent for normal or combination skin -- with an equal amount of dry cream and honey. Toss in a spoonful of ground almonds to add a bit of grit. Alternatively, mix equal parts milk and honey with two spoonfuls each of rolled oats and mashed bananas for a gentler scrub that also works as a mask. Massage these scrubs into your skin for a minute or two and rinse with warm then cold water. Use a facial scrub in place of your regular wash about three times per week.
Make a Mask
Milk does more than just wash the skin -- all by its lonesome, it makes for a gentle-yet-effective facial mask. Dab a milk-dampened cotton ball on your face and let the milk rest until your skin feels tight. Rinse with warm water for a softening effect. For an easy plumping mask, dampen cotton pads with whole milk and let them rest on your face for about five minutes. To mildly exfoliate, mix a cup of brown sugar with half as much honey and a large spoonful of whole milk or more for a gentler mask. Spread the mixture on your face and let it rest for about 10 to 20 minutes. Rinse your skin clean with warm water and apply your favorite moisturizer.
