Banana bread recipes allow you to transform spotty brown bananas into a moist loaf of bread. However, many of these recipes are high in fat and calories. Substitute applesauce for high-fat ingredients to create a healthier banana bread while retaining the moist, tender texture of the original recipe. Use unsweetened applesauce to avoid adding more sugar to the recipe.
Replace part or all of the oil or butter in banana bread with applesauce. This alters the texture of the bread, so start by substituting half of the fat with applesauce and increase the substitution amount if you like the result.
Reduce the liquid and the butter or oil by 1/4 cup each, reduce the sugar by 1 or 2 tbps. and add 1 cup of applesauce.
Substitute 3 tbsp. of applesauce for each egg in the recipe.
