Preparing a bagel may seem simple enough, but believe it or not there are three ways to microwave a bagel. A toaster or toaster oven can give a bagel a crisp taste and texture, while a microwave can make it soft and warm. Follow these instructions carefully to prevent a bagel from becoming too hard or soggy.
Method 1
Slice the bagel in half. Place it on a microwave-safe plate with the cut sides facing up. If you'd like, you can add butter, cream cheese or any toppings. Place it in the microwave for 10 seconds.
Method 2
Alternatively, wrap the bagel in a paper towel, which will soak up excess moisture. On a microwave-safe plate, cook the bagel at the high setting for 20 seconds. Let it cool for 30 seconds.
Method 3
To heat a cold or frozen bagel, place it in a microwave-safe plastic bag. Microwave at the medium setting for 30 seconds. If the bagel is still cold, nuke it for another 15 seconds.
Tip
If you heat a bagel for just a bit too long it becomes rubbery. Microwaving for more than a minute makes it stiff.
If a bagel is stale, try adding a few drops of water on top and heat for 20 seconds.
