Round steaks are tough cuts of meat, which require a long, slow simmering in a cooking liquid to tenderize them. Swiss steak is one such dish can involves slowly cooking round steak in a seasoned tomato sauce. Swiss steak seasoning mixtures are readily available in grocery stores, but these products may contain preservatives or large amounts of salt that you may not want to feed to your family. Make your own dry mix from spices you have at home so you know exactly what goes into it.

Combine the flour, minced onions, dried green bell peppers, garlic powder, salt, ground black pepper and paprika in the resealable jar.

Close the jar and shake to combine the ingredients.

Store the dry Swiss steak seasoning in a dry, dark place for up to one month.


To prepare Swiss steak using your seasoning mixture. Combine the dry mix with 8 oz of tomato sauce and 1 cup of water. Pour this over 1 1/2 lb. of round steak in a baking dish and cover. Bake the steak for 45 minutes at 350 degrees Fahrenheit.
