Powdered frosting mix is easy and quick to make. There are only a few ingredients, and there is no cooking required. You can prepare the mix in less than 15 minutes. Then, you can use the mix immediately by adding water, or you can store the mix in a cool, dry place for up to 12 weeks.

Things You'll Need

Sift the powdered sugar thoroughly in a large bowl.

Stir in the milk powder.

Cut in the shortening with a pastry blender. The mix is now finished. Makes 1/4 cup or 8 servings.

Store the mix in sandwich-size resealable bags. Mark the bags with the date and store the bags in a cool, dry place. Use the mix within 12 weeks.


  • If desired, add 1/2 cup of unsweetened cocoa powder to make the mix chocolate-flavored.

  • To use the mix, add 2 to 3 tsp. of water and blend thoroughly. Gradually add more water (1 tsp. at a time) if necessary. Stir until the mixture is smooth. Spread over cake or dessert as topping.
