How to Make an Exfoliating Face Mask

By Sarah Vrba

City pollution, dry air and plenty of chemical-laden beauty products bombard the skin on your face every day. Regular exfoliation helps to remove dead skin cells, improve circulation, brighten and provide a deep cleansing treatment for the pores. Less is more when making an additive-free, exfoliating face mask from ingredients already in your kitchen and garden.

Yogurt Brightener

Full fat plain yogurt contains lactic acid, a gentle exfoliant, along with moisturizing fats that produce that glowing, refreshed look. Opt for a full fat Greek yogurt for a thick, spreadable mask. Here's what you need:

  • Full fat plain yogurt
  • Honey
  • Lemon

Mix together 1/4 cup of the yogurt with a tablespoon of honey and a teaspoon of lemon juice. Honey acts as a natural antibacterial agent that also draws moisture from the atmosphere and locks it into your skin. Lemon contains citric acid, another powerful exfoliating agent.

Let the mask sit on your skin 10 to 15 minutes. The yogurt will dry slightly and tighten on your skin. Rinse off with warm water and pat your skin dry.

Soothing Oatmeal Mask and Scrub

Combine the power of exfoliating agents with a little texture for a combination mask and scrub. Cooked oatmeal has a gentle exfoliating texture along with soothing properties. You only need a handful of ingredients to make this luxurious mask:

  • Hot water
  • Oatmeal
  • Olive or coconut oil
  • Honey
  • Green tea powder

Mix 1/2 cup hot water with 1/3 cup oatmeal and mix together until it forms a thick paste. Allow the oatmeal to cool completely.

Mix the cooled oatmeal with a teaspoon of moisturizing olive or coconut oil along with a teaspoon of honey. Boost the exfoliating, antioxidant brightening power of this mask by adding a teaspoon of green tea powder. This final ingredient prevents the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the cells, which means tighter skin.

Combine the ingredients thoroughly and spread over your face. Let the mask sit about 10 minutes and then gently massage the mask in small circular motions to encourage exfoliation. Rinse your face off with warm water to remove the product, and pat your skin dry.
