Use these natural remedies to treat a black eye.

Heal

Step 1

Apply a cold pack to the eye immediately to restrict blood flow and prevent swelling. Hold the cold pack to the area for 10 minutes, then remove it for 10 minutes. Keep cycling this way to avoid damaging the skin around your eye. Do this throughout the first 48 hours after the injury. If your eye is swollen shut, don't try to force it open. Let the cold pack take down the swelling.

Step 2

Take acetaminophen according to the dosage instructions on the label to reduce swelling and pain. Don't take acetylsalicylic acid, which is an anti-coagulant and will keep your blood from clotting.

Step 3

Eat papaya. Papaya contains enzymes that enables blood to be absorbed by the body, which can reduce bruising. Eat three papayas a day, or take up to 600 mgs a day of papaya capsules.

Step 4

Increase your intake of vitamin C, which can can reduce bruising and speed healing. Eat foods that are rich in vitamin C, such as broccoli and peppers, or consider taking up a supplement.

Step 5

Apply a heated pack to your eye 48 hours after the injury occurs. Use a microwavable bean bag, a heating pad or a washcloth soaked in hot water. Apply the heated pack to the area for 15 minutes, then remove it for 15 minutes. Continue cycling the heated pack this way to improve circulation in the area. Do this throughout the day.
