Dry or ashy skin is a common problem for both men and women. It can affect people of any age and race, but is more common among those with darker skin tones. People are more prone to getting ashy skin on certain areas of their body, such as the knees. Ashy knees can be an embarrassing problem because it can cause the skin in this area to look darker than other areas of the body. A number of things can be done to get rid of ashy knees.

Use a daily moisturizer. Ashy skin is very dry and rough. It is important to keep the skin hydrated at all times, as this can greatly reduce ashy skin. Using a daily moisturizing lotion on ashy knees can be the most effective treatment for some people who suffer from this problem. Most people will need to moisturize several times a day and should do so after showering to seal in moisture.

Exfoliate the skin. Since ashy knees are caused by dry skin, it is important to make sure that the dry skin cells are being removed on a regular basis. An exfoliating product is designed for the face can work very effectively on the knees. Another option is a solution of oatmeal and water, which will exfoliate the skin.

Try hot oil treatments. Hot coconut oil and olive oil treatments are among the most well-known home remedies for getting rid of ashy skin. Warm up a small amount of oil and apply it directly to the ashy knees. Make sure the oil is not so hot that it will burn the skin. The point of an oil treatment is to moisturize the skin. For most people, the skin will feel moisturized right away, but others will need to repeat this treatment a few times to see results.

Avoid taking hot showers. Water that is too hot can strip the body of its natural oils. Anyone suffering from ashy knees will benefit much more from taking warm or cool showers.

Visit a dermatologist. There is a chance that ashy knees may be caused by a skin condition, such as psoriasis. The dermatologist may be able to prescribe a topical medication or provide further advice on how to get rid of ashy skin.

Tip

Keep in mind that scented body lotions can be less effective than moisturizers with SPF.

If ashy skin occurs in other areas aside from the elbows, it is likely the result of an additional skin condition.

Warning

Never try to scrape off ashy skin.
